If you’ve ever managed a construction site, you know there’s a long checklist to get through before work begins. Permits, equipment, materials, safety plans – it adds up fast. But one thing that often gets overlooked until the last minute? Restrooms.
It might not be the most glamorous part of the job, but proper sanitation keeps your crew comfortable, your site compliant, and your project running smoothly.
OSHA Requirements
OSHA has clear guidelines on job site sanitation. The basic rule is 1 toilet for every 20 workers. Once you go beyond 20, you’ll need to scale up:
| Workers Minimum | Toilets Required |
|---|---|
| 1-20 | 1 |
| 21-40 | 2 |
| 41-60 | 3 |
| 61-80 | 4 |
| 81-100 | 5 |
For sites with more than 100 workers, add 1 toilet for every additional 40 workers.
Don’t Forget Hand Washing
Hand wash stations aren’t optional – they’re required. OSHA mandates access to hand
washing facilities on all job sites. We recommend 1 hand wash station for every 2-3
restrooms, depending on site layout and crew size.
Service Frequency Matters
A portable restroom that isn’t serviced regularly isn’t doing anyone any favors. For most
job sites, weekly servicing works well. High-traffic sites or larger crews may need
service twice a week. We’ll help you figure out the right schedule based on your crew
size and project length.
Placement Tips
Where you put your units matters. A few things to keep in mind:
- Keep restrooms within a reasonable walk from all work areas – no one wants to
lose 15 minutes every time they need a break - Place units on level ground away from active work zones
- Make sure our trucks can access the units for servicing and pickup – 20 feet of
clearance is ideal - Consider locking units overnight to prevent vandalism or unauthorized use
Long-Term Rentals vs. Short-Term
Most construction projects run for weeks or months, not days. We offer monthly rentals
with regular servicing built in, so you’re not scrambling to coordinate logistics while
managing a build. One less thing to think about.
