Every April, thousands of people fill the streets of Japantown in San Francisco for the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival — one of the largest Japanese cultural celebrations in the United States. What most attendees don’t see is the extensive behind-the-scenes coordination that makes an event like this possible. Bay Area Temporary Sanitation is proud to be part of that effort.
This year, our team supported the Cherry Blossom Festival across multiple locations throughout the Japantown corridor, including Post Street, Webster Street, Sutter Street and the Civic Center parade route. Coordinating sanitation services across that many sites simultaneously takes precise planning, early morning deliveries and a team that knows how to execute under pressure.
What Goes Into a Multi-Location Event
For an event of this scale, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Each location has its own layout, foot traffic patterns and specific needs. Our team placed regular restrooms, ADA-compliant units and hand wash stations at strategic points throughout the festival footprint — making sure every corner of the event was covered.
Deliveries begin as early as 4am to ensure everything is in place before the crowds arrive. Service runs throughout the event day, and pickup follows a carefully timed schedule to minimize disruption to the surrounding neighborhood. It takes a full team effort from dispatch to our drivers on the ground to pull it off.
